VARIED WEAVES At CCI, Nandanam
Sangamam is for those hooked on traditional textiles. It's an exhibition of saris, traditional and unusual, put together by the Central Cottage Industries Corporation.
Just when you think you have seen enough of Sambalpuri blues and reds, and maroon Chettinad cottons, you are sure to see that one sari you must have. And it does not have to be a national award winning design that depicts a village scene woven on silk with a price tag of Rs. 24, 000. A grey Bengal handloom sari with a black border and mustard butis priced at Rs. 616 is simply stunning, so are the silk saris in subtle hues.
The CCI has come up with what it calls "value addition", with Rajasthani bagru prints on Mangalgiri cotton with zari borders.
But if it's tradition you want to wear then it's a Kalamkari sari with hand drawn, bejewelled figures from the Ramayana (Rs. 6,400).
Also on display are Kantha worked saris priced at Rs. 5,000 upward, Kancheepuram cottons (Rs.700 to Rs.1,200) and Venkatagiris (priced at Rs. 800 upward).
The exhibition is on till May 7 at the CCI, Temple Tower, No. 672, Anna Salai, Nandanam, ph: 24351182/24330809/898.
